Window Mounted Bird Feeder 3 Advantages Over Traditional Feeding Station

If you’ve been considering a new window mounted bird feeder for your home, you’re in good company. As a naturalist and bird watcher of many years, I enjoy using these feeders and would like to share three to advantages of using them over traditional feeding stations.

The first big advantage of this window mount feeder is that it will prevent squirrels, raccoons and other pesky varmints from getting into your bird feeder, eating all the seed or possibly destroying it with their weight.

Since these feeding stations are mounted directly to the window, you can determine the height of the feeder from the ground and its proximity to trees (branches can give animals access to the feeder.) The trick is to place the bird house high enough that raccoons and squirrels cannot reach it and far enough from trees so they cannot get to it from a tree branch.

The next big advantage of having a window mounted bird feeder is that they are easy to remove and clean. Feeders need to be cleaned every few weeks or so because otherwise, they can serve as a transmission point for disease. The purpose of a feeder it to allow you to birdwatch and to take care of the birds, so the last thing you want is to have a soiled bird feeder or one that is full of moldy seed.

Since these feeders are generally made from acrylic, they do not stain and are easy to clean by soaking in a sink of hot water with dish soap and a little bit of bleach to sanitize the feeder. Make sure to rinse the feeder thoroughly so there is no residue, then dry completely and reattach to the window. Never put an acrylic feeder in the dishwasher.

The third advantage of using a window mount bird feeder is that you can enjoy bird watching from inside your house. This makes for a great activity for parents and children, people who are infirm, those who work for home or anyone who enjoys bringing a view of nature indoors.

Since the feeders are generally made from acrylic, you can see right through them. This means you can enjoy the birds, watch them play and fight and even see them splitting open seeds. Since these feeding stations are small, they attract smaller, more colorful varieties like finches and keep away the bigger birds that can be aggressive and annoying.

Installing a feeder on your window is a great way to take care of the birds in the winter time when food is scarce. It’s also a fun way to watch the birds all year long, no matter what the weather.
