Bait Casting Reels To Land Big Fish

Bait casting reels are often used by expert anglers who enjoy catching big fish such as pike, salmon, and bass. While these reels are great for catching big fish, it does take time to perfect the casting technique. A few of the advantages of using a bait caster, as opposed to a spin casting reel, are longer casting, more precise lure placement, and better leverage.

Bait casting reels usually sit on top of the rod. The reason it can be hard to perfect is because it requires the use of your thumb to control the casting speed and placement. Many beginners who try to use a bait caster usually have problems with backlash. This is when the line gets tangled in the spool. It is sometimes referred to as a birds nest.

Bait casters are better for landing bigger fish because they are made for fishing with heavier lures and heavier lines. The heavier lures enable the angler to fish at higher speeds. You can take full advantage of baits such as spinner baits and crank baits. The heavier lines are great for fighting with the bigger fish such as bass. You are able to put more pressure on the line without the fear of it snapping.

Another advantage of this reel is more control and better lure placement. Often times, bass fishing requires you to place the lure in a precise spot. This precise placement can be difficult with spin cast reels due to lack of control. Once you get that big fish on the hook, you have a better chance of landing it due to the increase leverage since the reel sits closer to the rod.

The disadvantage of bait casting reels is the tougher learning curve. Most anglers have used spin casters since they were kids. The spin cast reel controls the line. With the bait caster, your thumb is in touch with the line on the spool. This puts the angler in complete control while fishing. In order to take advantages of benefits of the bait caster, you will need to practice casting or you will spend most of your fishing trip fixing birds nests.

There are many great spin cast reels that will get the job done. Many anglers have been landing fish for years using the spin cast reels. These wont become obsolete anytime soon. However, one of the greatest advantages of the bait caster is accurate lure placement. Youll be able to place your lure in its precise spot. Bait casting reels are your weapons of choice if you dont want to risk losing your trophy fish on the line. With its advantages, it will be worth the time investment to master the bait caster.

How To Decorate A Betta Fish Tank

So youve got your fish tank set up and all your Betta fish are soothingly and calmly swimming through your water wonderland but there is still something missing. How about decorating your Betta fish’s home?

Decorate the Betta fishs underwater home with colorful stones or even just plain gravel which will make a great base for your Betta fishs aqua kingdom. Add small rocky cave like structures you can get from the local pet shop or even old ornaments like toys or sculptures lying around your house to give your fish tank real flair! Remember a creative home is a happy home so give the Betta fish lots of different things to stimulate their fishy minds!

Brighten up even the most ordinary items in your fish tank, spend that little bit extra on your beloved Betta fish and buy a water filter and water heater which can make your betta healthy.

If you really want to go that extra mile and add another completely new dimension to your fish arena then try a themed fish tank. Why not try a pirate themed fish tank with a mini casket of treasure and a mini old sunken wooden ship! Or even a cowboy themed fish tank with a miniature shady, dusty saloon bar with mini cowboys on horse back roaming around your Betta fish, even use sand as a base to give it that real, authentic western finish.

Please be careful though when selecting novelty items to put in with the Betta fish as jagged rocks or decorations can potentially tear the Betta fishs fins. So take extreme consideration when picking and choosing as the last thing youll want is injured Betta fish or even worse, dead Betta fish due to a novelty idea you chucked into their fish tank without a seconds thought.

Also avoid hard plastic plants, as they can be rough on the fins also so instead use live, real plants. While live plants are not a necessity for the Betta fish to survive, they really are a great addition to Betta fishs tanks. They’re prettier than the fake ones, and Betta fish love lounging on the luscious, green leaves and hiding in them to sleep.

Dont let your Betta fish get bored of the same old surroundings, try to change the items in your fish tank as regularly as youd change their water. Decorate their tank, keep it fresh!

Pets In The Classroom Program Exceeds First Year Expectations

The Pet Care Trust is pleased to announce that the Pets in the Classroom Program saw surprising growth in 2010. The program awarded 2,060 grants to teachers in 2010, its first full year of operation. With an average of 30 students per classroom, the program has brought pets into the lives of almost 62,000 children. Some of these children may have no other contact with a pet except in their classroom. In many cases, it could be the beginning of a lifelong interest in pets and pet care.

Pets in the Classroom is an educational grants program supporting responsible pet care for school classrooms. Sponsored by the Pet Care Trust, the goal of the program is to establish healthy child-pet relationships at an early age by supporting responsible pet care in Kindergarten-6th Grade classrooms across the U.S. and Canada. Many school teachers have very limited resources for the support of classroom animals. The Pet Care Trust sponsors this program to help teachers purchase or maintain pets in the classroom through direct, no-hassle grants. The program leaves it up to the teacher to select the pet that is most appropriate for her/his classroom. There have been a wide variety of funding requests, from snakes and lizards to guinea pigs and rabbits, proving that many different species provide interesting classroom companions.

As of December, 2010, 2,066 certificates were granted totaling nearly $264,000. . The programs initial goal for the year of 700 grant requests was far exceeded. Pets in the Classroom has funded the following classroom pet requests:

Aquariums- 761
Reptiles- 435
Small Animals- 737
Birds- 93
Sustaining- 40 (These grants help teachers who already have a classroom pet with food and supplies).

The program hopes to fund an additional 2,000 classroom grants in 2011. All funding for Pets in the Classroom has come from the Pet Care Trust endowment. As the program expands to reach more elementary school classrooms across the country, the program will rely on direct financial support from the pet industry. Pets in the Classroom welcomes support from corporate and individual donors through tax deductible contribution to the Pet Care Trust. Visit the Trust website today at www.petcartrust.org.

How To Be A Zoo Keeper

To be keeper for a day is a truly memorable experience. If you are a zoo keeper you can get up close to big zoo animals like lions and tigers as a big cat keeper, or meet and feed herbivores such as White Rhinos, Giraffes and Lowland Tapirs.
As a zoo keeper you will be comfortable with all types of animals including large animals like zebras and small animals like meerkats and snakes. To apply for a job as a zoo keeper ideally you will have had some experience of working with animals in a practical environment, such as at a vet or a farm.
Being a zoo keeper is a potentially dangerous but incredibly rewarding experience. A zoo keeper performs a number of tasks such as:

Helping with cleaning out and daily maintenance of the enclosure.
Preparing meals and feeding the animals
Enrichment activities for the animals such as scent trails for the big cats
Environmental enrichment

Zoo keepers require a number of skills to be successful. For instance they must work well both on their own and as part of a team. Having good communication skills is a must and in this translates to both communicating with the animals and communicating with your fellow zoo staff. In terms of qualifications you will need good maths and English GCSEs, with science preferred and preferably a national vocational qualification in animal care and husbandry.
When you are a zoo keeper here is a lot of training you need to go through to conform to Health and Safety regulations, and to act safely and responsibly, both for you and the animals.
It is also necessary to be able to think laterally and solve problems. For instance if the animals are not behaving in a way which is good for them or other zoo animals, you may need to come up with creative ways to get them to change their behaviour. This is one of the most fun and rewarding aspects of being a zoo keeper, as well as the most challenging.
If you think that being a zoo keeper might be for you then there are a number of zoos which run one off day experiences where you can try what it is really like to do the job. Consider doing one of these experiences and then you will have a better idea of whether the role is for you.

Swamp Tours – Bird Watching in Louisiana

Louisiana is renowned throughout the United States for its diverse ecosystem, which is home to a huge array of wildlife, including many different cranes, songbirds and various wading-water and shore birds. Swamp tours offer an opportunity for tourists and residents to encounter the native birds up close. Due to the nature of the wetlands, this is something that is ordinarily very difficult to achieve by hiking.

If you want to see the most variety of birds, then the best time to take swamp tours is in the winter or the spring. However, its worth noting that very few reptiles and amphibians will be active during the winter because they are unable to properly thermo regulate their body temperature. The majority of migratory birds will be present in the middle of the spring time in Louisiana, which is when you will be able to see the most color and activity. During spring migration, Barataria Bay, located in Louisiana, is estimated to have one of the densest concentrations of species.

Another good location for bird watching can be found in the southern part of the state where the Sabine Wildlife Refuge is located. Since there are over 120,000 acres inside the perimeter of the refuge, it may take several tries to find the species that youre looking for. Swamp tours are one of the only ways to navigate deep into the heart of the refuge, and its an excellent place to take pictures of Peregrine Falcons, among other predatory birds. Additionally, many people come to Louisiana to see the Wood Storks that migrate into the state during the winter months. Sabine Wildlife Refuge is also home to a many other native animals, including alligators, raccoons and 132 different species of fish.

If youre looking for a way to learn more about the native birds while taking swamp tours, then its a good idea to contact a local wildlife club before heading out. For example, the Crescent Bird Club in Louisiana is an excellent resource for discovering the best places to find specific birds at different times of the year. Additionally, the Orleans Audubon Society can help identify the birds that are photographed if you need help. The best way to keep track of the birds that are located is to bring along a pocket field guide. The ideal bird watching field guide will have color illustrations and photographs to accompany the species profile.
